US airlines have applied for flights from Miami to Cuba

On Wednesday, the deadline for applications for US airlines that are planning to make commercial flights from Miami to Cuba has expired.
American Airlines has applied for 18 daily flights, including 10 to Havana, from Miami International Airport, which is one of the carrier's hubs.
The head of American Airlines, Doug Parker, noted the importance of the resumption of air links between the US and Cuba.
“Americans have been preparing for this day in every possible way for decades. Miami is the heart and soul of the Cuban-American community,” Parker said.
Among those that have submitted applications to the Florida Department of Transportation is Delta Airlines, which intends to receive five daily flights to Havana, including two from Miami.
JetBlue Airlines plans to fly to the capital of Cuba from Fort Lauderdale Airport four times a day. In addition, Silver Airways, specializing in flights between Florida and the Bahamas, United Airlines, Southwest and Spirit Airlines low-cost airline, have submitted their applications.
At stake are a total of 20 daily flights to Havana and nine to other cities in Cuba, including Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo, Manzanillo, Varadero and Santa Clara.
The agreement on the resumption of regular flights between the USA and Cuba was signed on February 16 in Havana. In mid-December last year, the authorities of the two countries reached an agreement on the background of strengthening relations between the United States and Cuba.
The agreement also provides for flights of Cuban carriers, but US officials have repeatedly said that in the near future, the use of airlines of Cuba is hardly possible.
As for the requirements for US citizens visiting Cuba, they will remain the same, with the same 12 categories to choose from. Tourism is still not allowed, although Cayo Coco and Cayo Largo are beach resorts.
