American airlines that frequently lose or spoil baggage
The chances of your luggage safely arriving at its destination depend on the airline, notes Travel + Leasure.
Spending time at the baggage carousel can often be compared to gambling: will my baggage appear on the conveyor belt? Will it still be whole or has it been dug? However, according to a LuggageHero report, the chances of your suitcase being mishandled in 2020 was only 0,4%.
While the total number of mishandled bags still appears high at 853, it is a small percentage of the total 821 that were on board flights for the year. The report states that one of the major factors in baggage handling is the airline.
Allegiant Air topped the list of top carriers for the second year in a row with only a 0,15% baggage mishandling rate. Southwest and Hawaiian followed with roughly equal numbers.

At the other end of the scale, American Airlines performed worst, beating out Envoy Air, which had the worst baggage handling score in 2019. In 2020, American's mishandled baggage rate was 0,597% and Envoy's was 0,587%, the report found.

LuggageHero has also calculated the best times of the year when your luggage is more likely to be safe. While the 2020 data may not reflect normal trends, January 2020, when air traffic was still relatively normal, was the worst, with 205 suitcases mishandled, of which 040 were from American Airlines. The smallest number of such cases was in September: 46 out of 598 suitcases.
Incorrectly handled baggage in this case is defined as lost, delayed, damaged or stolen suitcases.

While comparing pandemic-era travel data may not be the most revealing, LuggageHero has been ranking airlines in this aspect for several years. In 2018, they found that Delta, Spirit and JetBlue were the best at baggage handling, while Envoy was the worst. Last year's top performers were Allegiant, Frontier and Hawaiian, with Envoy coming in last.
LuggageHero, which provides luggage storage options at 450 locations around the world, examined mishandled baggage data from US Department of Transportation Airline Consumer Reports and generated pivot tables to compare and analyze the data.
