American woman returned from vacation in Mexico paralyzed and blind

A tourist from the United States went to rest in Mexico and returned home without sight and with paralyzed legs.

Mary Katherine Derin, 46, traveled to Mexico with her husband Tony to celebrate their wedding anniversary, writes "Lenta.ru report". On the very first day of her vacation, the American woman felt unwell: “When I started to get weaker, I decided it was a cold. We went to the doctor and he said I was dehydrated, so they gave me an IV.”

However, the procedure did not help, and later Mary Catherine's eyesight deteriorated.

“I still thought it was the flu. I had flashes when everything turned black, and then my eyesight returned again, but I saw everything blurred, ”the American shared.

During the five days of vacation, Catherine Derin lost the ability to see and was completely paralyzed from the waist down.

When the couple returned home to Maryland, they immediately went to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed Derin with Guillain-Barré syndrome (a rare disease in which the immune system affects the nervous system).

Then the doctors began to treat Derin, but the cause of her blindness was still a mystery. Later it turned out that vision problems were caused by congenital abnormalities associated with accumulation of fluid in the brain.

“The loss of vision and Guillain-Barre syndrome were completely unrelated, it just happened at the same time. The doctors said it was a great rarity, ”Derin explained.

After that, Mary Catherine underwent surgery on the brain, and six months later, her eyesight gradually returned to her. By the time she was discharged from the hospital, an American could move with a cane over short distances.
