An American woman with two uteruses gave birth to unique twins: the children were born on different days

An Alabama woman with a rare congenital abnormality that left her with two uteruses has given birth to healthy twin girls, reports Reuters.

Kelsey Hatcher gave birth to Roxy Leila on the evening of December 16 and her sister Rebel Laken on the morning of December 17 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital. The mother of five children reported this on social networks.

“Our miracle children are born! They decided they were statistically rare enough that they should just go ahead and have their own separate birthdays,” Hatcher wrote on Instagram.

Hatcher has a rare double uterus and was pregnant with a baby in each uterus. A rare pregnancy known as a bipartite pregnancy occurs once in a million.

“I had already seen Kelsey during her third pregnancy and knew she had a double uterus, but it was only one baby—two babies in two uteruses was a real medical surprise,” Hatcher obstetrician Shweta Patel said in a hospital news release.

Hatcher's pregnancy was considered high risk and she was induced at 39 weeks. After 20 hours of labor, two girls were born.
Although a typical twin pregnancy is defined by the presence of two babies in the same uterus, Richard Davis, the doctor who co-managed the pregnancy, said "it's okay to call the girls fraternal twins."

The first child was born naturally, like Hatcher's three previous children, while the second was born by Caesarean section.

The medical team prepared three possible birth scenarios: both babies were delivered vaginally, one baby was born vaginally, and the other was delivered by C-section or C-section for both deliveries.
