An American woman served her term in terrible conditions in a Russian prison: she has now been released, but she cannot fly home

In February of this year, US citizen Sarah Krivanek was sentenced to a year and 3 months in prison. She became one of two American prisoners serving sentences in Russia (the other is basketball player Britney Gardner, who was sentenced to 9 years for drug smuggling). On November 7, she was released from the Ryazan correctional facility KP-4, according to the telegram channel of the foundation Rus' Seated.

Sarah Rachel Krivanek was convicted of inflicting light bodily harm on her friend from Moscow. In November 2021, she stabbed a man with non-life-threatening stab wounds. The American was found guilty under part 1 of article 119 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Threat to kill”) and paragraph “c” of part 2 of article 115 (“Causing minor bodily harm with the help of objects used as weapons”).

The American repented of her deed and said that she just wanted to scare the victim.

The employees of the colony-settlement did not give the ex-prisoner a power of attorney for the person who was supposed to pick up her documents from the Moscow region. How she will now be able to get her personal belongings is unknown. She told Natalia Filimonova, a human rights activist of the Sitting Rus' Foundation, about this.

A 45-year-old American woman arrived in Russia from California several years ago. The woman earned her English lessons.

In 2020, she moved in with a Muscovite. The roommate began to beat the woman, and one day she cut his nose with a knife. A criminal case was opened against a US citizen, and she was under house arrest. In December 2021, she applied to the embassy of her country, and they bought her a plane ticket to Atlanta. Krivanek was detained while trying to fly home.

Now Sarah Krivanek is waiting for deportation home. But it's too early to say that everything is coming to an end.

“Documents, a mobile phone, Sarah’s bank cards are at the investigator in Odintsovo, but she herself cannot pick them up,” Natalya Filimonova commented to the correspondent of “NeMoskva Says”. - She was recognized in Russia as an undesirable person, a woman does not have the right to move independently. Our organization found a volunteer in Moscow who would take these documents by proxy. The power of attorney was brought to the colony-settlement, and now Sarah does not have this power of attorney. Why the document was taken away, what to do now is unknown.”

Human rights activists of the “Rus Sitting” foundation found out about the situation of an American woman who ended up in a Russian prison in September. In the colony-settlement, she found herself without basic things: there were no personal hygiene products, there was no warm clothes and money for calls. Human rights activists and volunteers provided her with everything she needed.
