American Paul Whelan: the administration of the Russian colony took revenge on me for refusing to give an interview to RT

The other day, David Whelan, the brother of the American Paul Whelan, imprisoned in Russia and accused of espionage, reported new dramatic details of Paul’s stay in the Russian penal colony IK-17. According to him, on May 26, the deputy head of the colony and the head of security burst into Whelan’s cell and, dumping all his personal belongings on the floor, began to trample them with their boots.

«They stole earflaps that I made for myself and two sweatshirts that I also hemmed and used to keep warm in the cold cell. Two men ripped the rubber bands from the packets of my letters and scattered them, and trampled on my clean clothes and prison uniform with dirty boots.”, David quotes the words of his brother.

According to the Whelan brothers, such behavior is revenge for Paul’s refusal to give an interview to Russian propagandists from the RT television channel. David suggests that the television crews promised the prison authorities a bribe if they managed to persuade the American to give an interview. Accordingly, Paul’s refusal to communicate with RT deprived the colony’s leadership of easy income.

«The plot of Russia Today propagandists did not work out. The film crew followed him around the camp, but Paul, although he was polite to them, refused to answer their questions.' says David.

The brother of the prisoner notes that for several hours several people ran after him throughout the colony: two reporters, two cameramen and employees of IK-17. The obsessive company pursued the American at a construction site, at a factory and at other prison enterprises, not responding to Whelan's numerous statements that he had no desire to communicate with them.

David Whelan recalls that during Paul's imprisonment, the former warden of the colony Vladimir Denisov and his deputy Alexander Shukshin have already been arrested and convicted for corruption, and other employees, apparently, are also not averse to making money on bribes. However, according to David, numerous complaints about the actions of the IK-17 administration have not yet yielded any results.

This is not the first public scandal during the imprisonment of Paul Whelan in IK-17. Last December, an American reportedthat the administration "hid" him in the prison hospital in order to hide the fact of increased recruitment of prisoners for the war in Ukraine, which was carried out at that time in the colony. Previously, Whelan and his brother had nominated assumptionthat the reason for the criminal case against him was the “setup” by Paul’s old friend, an FSB officer Ilya Yatsenko.

“It’s harmful to know the truth”

The fact that RT never got an interview with Whelan most likely pleased the well-known Orthodox preachers of the war. For example, the other day one of them, who calls himself an "Orthodox psychotherapist", warned Russians from the terrible temptation "find out as much information as possible that would correspond to the truth as much as possible". According to him, the truth is a "weapon of the enemy", and therefore it is extremely harmful to know it.

«We should be guided not by the degree of reliability of information, but by the degree of its usefulness.", - Advised "Orthodox doctor", offering as the most "useful" information the briefings of the General of the Russian Ministry of Defense Igor Konashenkov.

«We need a system to protect people from the information flow. Even if a person really wants to know something, he should not have such an opportunity for his own good.", - said "psychologist". For those who, in spite of everything, seek to find out the truth, and even more so to reflect on it, the preacher threatened with all possible punishments - from alcoholism to becoming a "traitor to his people."
