Indiana indicted foster parents who adopted an orphan from Ukraine. They are suspected of leaving the child unattended. But the parents themselves claim that the girl deceived them, and in fact at the time of adoption she was an adult. Writes about this Lenta.Ru.

In 2010, Michael and Kristin Barnett adopted an eight-year-old girl from Ukraine, suffering from congenital spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia - a violation of bone development that causes dwarfism. She arrived in the USA in 2008 and at first lived in another family, which later abandoned her.

The age of the adopted daughter from the very beginning aroused doubts among the Barnetts. In June 2010 of the year, they showed her to the doctor, who confirmed that the girl was eight years old. In 2012, she underwent a new inspection. This time, her age was estimated in 11 years, that is, a year more than according to the documents.

According to Christine Barnett, a third specialist concluded that the orphan is an adult woman; the conclusion was made on the teeth and secondary sexual characteristics.

In the same year, according to authorities, the couple went to the Indiana Succession Court and officially changed their daughter's age to 22. The officials did not explain how this was done. A few months later, the whole family, except her, moved to Canada. The Ukrainian was left alone in Lafayette (Indiana).

In 2012, the girl was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, where she was diagnosed with a psychopathic personality disorder and recognized as a sociopath. Around the same time, she began to say that she was older than 18 years. Determining her true age was difficult, because the records provided by Ukrainian officials were extremely incomplete, and her congenital spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia meant that typical age estimates would not help.

For several months she lived in an apartment rented by foster parents. She did not have money, so she had to rely on the help of her neighbors. In May 2014, an orphan was evicted for non-payment. There is almost no information about her future fate. It is known that several years after these events, another married couple wanted to adopt her, however, the Barnetts were against it. Later, the new family changed their mind about adoption for reasons that were not indicated.

The police adheres to the version that the age of the orphan indicated in the documents is true. This is confirmed by the testimony of Michael Barnett, who believes that his adopted daughter was a minor. According to him, in 2012, Christine taught the girl to say that her real age is 22, and she just looks younger than her years.

Although charges have been brought, not one of the Barnetts has yet been held accountable. The court records do not indicate whether they have a lawyer, and authorities hinted that even stranger details of the case might appear.
