An American was given 22 years in prison for participating in the storming of the Capitol: this is the longest sentence in this case.

The Proud Boys is an extremist group that espouses a neo-fascist ideology and whose members attack people during protests, encourage violence and break the law.

Tarrio, 39, asked for leniency before the judge gave him a 22-year prison sentence. This exceeds the 18-year sentence handed down to Oath Keepers founder Stuart Rhodes and former Proud Boys leader Ethan Nordin for involvement in sedition and other charges.

Tarrio, who led a group of neo-fascists, bowed his head after the verdict was passed and then squared his shoulders. He raised his hand and made a "V" gesture with his fingers as he was escorted out of the courtroom in orange prison clothes.

He was sentenced as the Justice Department prepares to put Trump on trial in the same building in Washington. He is accused of illegally planning to hold on to power after the election.
