Americans are again asked to wear masks, but now not because of the coronavirus

On June 6, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) raised the alert level for monkeypox to level 2, recommending that travelers wear masks among other health measures, reports FoxNews.

While monkeypox has not reached COVID-19 levels, it has spread worldwide from Africa since March. The symptoms of monkeypox begin as relatively flu-like but soon spread to swollen lymph nodes and a rash all over the body and face. The rash eventually develops into painful lesions that leave severe scarring.

"Cases of monkeypox have been reported in Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia," the CDC said in a statement.

“Some cases have been reported among men who have sex with men. Some cases have also been reported among people who live in the same household as the infected person.

As of June 3, there have been 21 cases of monkeypox in the US associated with the current outbreak, according to the CDC.

According to Dr. Amesh Adal, the disease may have gone unnoticed in Western countries under the guise of an STI. There are a number of STIs that have symptoms similar to monkeypox.

“What probably happened is that an endemic infectious disease from Africa entered the social and sexual network and then spread around the world through large events such as raves in Belgium,” Adal said.
