Americans are warned about the danger of visiting Mexican resorts
The US State Department issued a warning about the danger of traveling to Mexico after eight bodies were discovered this week in Cancún.
When visiting Mexico, tourists are advised to "exercise heightened caution," the State Department noted that "cruel crimes such as murder, kidnapping and robbery are widespread in the country," writes Time.
Eight bodies were found in the Cancun area of 20 August. Two victims were found in an abandoned taxi, two more dismembered corpses were found in plastic bags elsewhere. Another person was found associated with a gunshot wound, another was found dead in a hammock. The seventh victim was shot and hidden in a plastic bag. Details about the eighth body are not disclosed.
In the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located, there has recently been a surge in the number of murders. According to the State Department, the number of murders in Quintana Roo in 2018 was greatly increased compared to the same period in 2016.
Most of the killings are directed against members of criminal gangs who wage war with each other, but these showdowns sometimes endanger tourists in Mexico.
