Fewer Americans are moving every year. In 2022, 12,6% of the population moved, down from 12,8% in 2021 and 16,8% in 2006, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But nearly a fifth of those who do move tend to move to another state. And this year, it looks like everyone is heading to the Southeast.
Moving and storage company Pods Enterprises has released its fifth annual Moving Trends Report, which identifies the U.S. cities with the most in- and out-of-town moves. The report analyzed domestic intercity moving data from January 2024 to March 2025. Two cities topped the list: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina.

“The Myrtle Beach-Wilmington area topped our list for the third year in a row, which may indicate that more people want to live where others vacation,” the report notes. “Living in this coastal region of the Southeast meets criteria for affordability, a welcoming atmosphere, and proximity to nature, although it does come with risks associated with the Atlantic hurricane season.”
The company also found that the Southeastern states continue to be a top destination for relocators, with Ocala, Florida, coming in second, followed by Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina, area in third and fourth, respectively.
According to the company, the average intercity move was nearly 2000 kilometers, and nearly 92% of such moves were from one state to another.
“The fifth annual Relocation Trends report highlights the key drivers of American relocation preferences in recent years — a desire for warmer climates, lower costs, and a greater focus on balance and quality of life,” said Rich Schwartz, senior vice president of corporate operations at Pods, noting, “While the Southeast continues to lead the way, we’re seeing strong growth in other parts of the South, too, such as Dallas-Fort Worth (No. 5).”
So which regions are people leaving? According to the report, Southern California once again leads the way in terms of departures.

“The Northeast and West Coast continue to see steady growth in out-migration, likely due to high costs of living, overcrowding, and rising insurance premiums,” Schwartz added. “As economic uncertainty continues and the housing market remains tight, we expect continued migration to more affordable and growing regions across the country.”
And while the Midwest didn't make the top 10, Pods noted a "noticeable increase" in moves to the region compared to the previous year. That makes sense, given that Midwestern cities and towns often top lists of the best places to live.
