American Airlines refuses entertainment system on board

When ordering a new batch of aircraft, airlines are faced with a dilemma: whether to order entertainment screens that are installed on the back of each seat or not.

Most aviation observers expect this technology to become obsolete in the coming years, as more and more people fly with their gadgets. However, this moment has not yet come.

Any passenger flying over a long distance still expects to see at least a tiny monitor a few centimeters away.

Despite this, American Airlines decided to get ahead of time and purchased 100 Boeing 737 aircraft, which will be commissioned at the end of 2017, without screens on the backs of the seats.

Instead, the company will provide high-speed Internet on its board so that passengers can watch movies on their phones, tablets and laptops.

And this is really justified. 90% of passengers, according to the airline, come on board the aircraft with their gadgets. Installing the same entertainment system in each airliner costs $ 3 million.

Having abandoned monitors, the company saves not only on their installation, but also on fuel, since all the wiring and modified seats add more weight to the aircraft and, accordingly, it consumes more fuel.

The airline reports that every passenger will be able to watch their favorite movie or show, or listen to music for free. You only need to pay for the connection to the Internet. Currently one day costs $ 16 plus tax.

Moreover, companies will offer gadgets for rent to those passengers who do not have their own.

As for the reliability of the Internet, since it can be very slow on the plane, American Airlines decided to change its service provider. The airline is switching to satellite Internet, which will provide a fast connection.

However, most travelers may not be affected by the speed of the Internet. Downloading movies and TV programs on the tablet for many has become a pre-trip ritual.

On long-haul flights, there may be a problem with charging the gadget, as well as an insufficient amount of space on the table. Many tablets are expected on which someone will spill a drink.

However, the benefits to both customers and airlines certainly outweigh the problems.
