American Airlines left two children without food, water and in terrible conditions after their flight was canceled

A Florida mother has filed a lawsuit against American Airlines. She claims the airline put her children in a prison-like room overnight without food or water after their flight was cancelled, reports Dailymail.

Amber Vencil says her 12- and 10-year-old sons, who were traveling alone, were left without food, water, blankets or pillows in a room that looked like a prison cell after the canceled flight.

On July 30, 2022, the children traveled on an unaccompanied minor airline flight from Missouri to Syracuse, New York, with a stop in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The airline called Vencil's partner, Ted, who was listed as a greeter in Syracuse, where the children were heading to visit his family, and informed him that the children would be flying there the next day at 9 a.m.

Ted was told the boys would be kept in "a nice unaccompanied minor room with beds and a private bathroom," the suit says.

Meanwhile, on July 30, around 23:40 p.m., the airline emailed Vencil, informing her that her children would be on the flight just after 17:00 p.m. on July 31. The mother had no idea what flight her children would be on because of conflicting information.

The phone number provided by American Airlines was unhelpful. She was unable to contact her children for hours until an employee at Charlotte Douglas International Airport connected her with one of her sons.

The son then revealed horrific details, according to the lawsuit: They "haven't had anything to drink or eat since last night, not even the snacks that airlines usually provide."

The employee was finally able to bring the boys some food and drink.

“The worst part is they were at the airport, they could have been taken anywhere,” said David Yaroslavitz, Vencil's lawyer. “They were at the airport, there were all sorts of crazy people around.”

They were kept in a room "like a prison cell" that was "scarily" cold and forced to sleep on a couch with the lights on, according to the lawsuit.

According to the lawsuit, the airline reimbursed Vencil $150 for expenses for unaccompanied minors.

The lawsuit describes how the children are now afraid to fly and worry they will be "lost or abandoned" due to the airline's "negligence." The lawyer called this behavior contrary to American policy, “reckless and careless.”

“What is especially galling is that, upon learning of their apparent failures, defendant simply offered empty apologies and refunds, essentially telling plaintiff, 'Sorry, we lost your kids, lady, but here's your money back,'” the lawsuit adds.

The lawsuit seeks an undisclosed amount of damages.
