Alcohol, drugs, lawyer's failures: how is the case of Mikhail Efremov, who made a fatal accident

Actor Mikhail Efremov at the time of the accident, in which the driver of another car died, was in a state of not only alcoholic, but also drug intoxication, Russian media reported. This fact was added to his accusation, writes Air force.

Moscow prosecutor Denis Popov demanded that the case be transferred from the district department to the main investigative department of the Russian Interior Ministry in Moscow. The case is under special control in the Moscow prosecutor’s office, the department said.

Russian news agencies wrote about traces of drugs found in Efremov’s blood, citing sources. It was reported that traces of drugs were residual, that is, he could have used them earlier, but this did not affect his condition at the time of the accident.

Now, a point on the drug intoxication of Efremov was added to his accusation, the Moscow prosecutor’s office told Interfax. RIA Novosti, with reference to the Moscow police, clarifies that a case has been opened on the sale of drugs in relation to those who sold them to the actor (their identities have not yet been established).

According to the results of a medical examination, 2,1 ppm of alcohol was found in Efremov's blood.

Interrogation Video

On the morning of June 10, the Ministry of Internal Affairs published a video of Efremov’s interrogation after the accident. The recording shows the actor sitting on a bed in an apartment. When asked about his condition, he replies: “I’m in no condition right now, I can’t talk.”

“There was a monstrous car accident, and that’s why I’m in shock,” Efremov says in the video. When asked if he was drunk, he replies “probably,” and then asks to talk when he “comes to his senses.”

He is also asked if he pleads guilty.

“Of course, where am I going to go,” the actor replies.

According to police, in 2019-2020, Efremov was fined 50 fines for violating traffic rules, but this is mainly speeding, going to the public transport lane or not observing markings.

Confusion with lawyers

After the decision of the Tagansky court on a written undertaking not to leave, Efremov was put on a bracelet, and his lawyers announced that they would no longer give comments to the press. “We will not give any comments now on any occasion, this is the position of the defense,” Efremov’s lawyer Elizaveta Shargorodskaya told RIA Novosti.

Lawyer Vitaly Chernyshev, who reported to the press on June 9 that Efremov was ready to provide “all possible assistance” to the family of the deceased Sergei Zakharov, was no longer present at the court hearing to select a preventive measure in the evening of the same day. Later he said that so far only Shargorodskaya is leading the case.

“No one contacted the family,” said lawyer Alexander Dobrovinsky, representing the interests of the family of the deceased, when asked whether Efremov’s representatives offered help, RIA Novosti writes.

Dobrovinsky, like another well-known lawyer Tatyana Stukalova, refused to defend Efremov, although they both received such an offer, the agency writes. Dobrovinsky said that instead he agreed to represent the family of the deceased Sergei Zakharov in court for free.

“The family of Sergei Zakharov turned to me with a request to help them achieve justice. And I was captivated by their desire, using the example of their family grief, to give our society the opportunity to learn an important lesson: driving while drunk can lead to a great tragedy for many people,” Dobrovinsky said in an interview with RBC.

The telegram channel Mash claimed that after the incident, the actor and his representatives phoned about 50 lawyers, but most of them did not agree to represent Efremov.

What did the wife of Efremov say

Efremov’s wife Sofya Kruglikova, with whom the actor has three children, told the Moskovsky Komsomolets publication that she had not seen her husband since last week and was mostly in self-isolation at the dacha, while Efremov remained in Moscow.

“He’s going through a difficult period now, his mother died last summer. Then Galina Borisovna Volchek died,” Kruglikova said. “And he went completely off the rails, he drank very heavily. It was almost impossible to stop it. I had virtually little contact with him during the isolation period.”

According to her, Efremov often drank with his “bathhouse” comrades, whom she hardly knows.

“I’m afraid of them, to be honest. When they tell me in a rude voice, “Don’t rock the boat, stay at home,” I feel scared for my children. “I don’t go to this company,” said the actor’s wife.

Bar "Ulysses"

Police officers, according to a RIA Novosti source, carried out investigative actions on June 10 in the Ulysses pub, where, according to preliminary data, Efremov was before the accident.

“The investigative actions were carried out in the Ulysses bar. Law enforcement officials checked whether Efremov actually spent time there before the accident. Video camera recordings were checked,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

On the eve of the telegram channels there was a recording from video surveillance cameras on which a person like Efremov unevenly parks the car and enters the building, and half an hour later leaves it. The authors of the video claim that it was made right next to this pub.

In the same building where the pub is located, the police department for the Arbat district is located, notes the “Judicial Sneakers” telegram channel. The pub is located literally a stone's throw from Efremov's place of residence, where he will serve house arrest.

Judging by the reviews on the pub on the network, Efremov was a frequent guest of the institution.

“I sat at the counter next to the actor Efremov”, “Next to the Old Arbat, Mikhail Efremov sat next to me,” the reviews say. The author of one of the reviews even considers Efremov’s frequent visits “one of the disadvantages of the establishment.”

Komsomolskaya Pravda, citing an unnamed source, claims that the pub allegedly refused to serve the artist that day, offering him only takeaway dishes, which is why he had an argument with the management of the establishment and left. The pub management did not officially comment on the situation.

On the evening of June 8, Mikhail Efremov in his jeep flew into the oncoming lane and crashed into a Lada car with a cargo compartment. Truck driver who worked as a courier died in the morning at the Research Institute named after Sklifosovsky from multiple injuries and heavy blood loss.

A medical examination showed 2,1 ppm of alcohol in Efremov’s blood, which is approximately equal to a bottle of vodka. A criminal case has been initiated against the actor under paragraph “a” of Part 4 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code (violation of traffic rules resulting in the death of a person through negligence). Efremov faces from five to 12 years in prison. He is under recognizance not to leave until August 9.
