Accounts of 390 thousands more taxpayers could crack

As a result of the hacking of the website of the US Internal Revenue Service (SVD), hackers could get access to more than 300 information of thousands of American taxpayers, the newspaper reported on Monday Wall Street Journal with reference to the tax administration of the United States.

In May, the SVD reported that hackers tried to access 225 data of thousands of US taxpayers of the previous year. On Monday, the US Department of Internal Affairs admitted that, according to updated information, an additional 390 thousand taxpayer accounts may have been attacked. These figures include 220 thousand examples of “possible access to previous year data”, as well as about 170 thousand cases where “the identification process could not be completed.”

According to updated information, hackers made more than 600 thousands of requests.

As previously reported, to gain access to this information, the attackers blocked the so-called “security page”, which requests information about the taxpayer, including his Social Security number, date of birth, tax status and mailing address.

Hackers tried to access taxpayer data through the online application Get Transcript, which allows users to view information about the tax data of the previous year. At the moment, the US SVD has stopped the application.

“SVD takes the security of taxpayer data seriously, and we are working to improve the security of Get Transcript, including measures such as improving taxpayer identity authentication protocols,” the agency said in a statement.

As before, the US SVD announced the immediate notification of the affected taxpayers, as well as that it will take other measures, including the provision of a free credit guarantee and special identification numbers to reduce cases of tax refund fraud.
