IT workers in California rent tiny residential capsules for $500-900 per month
Workers at a technology center in San Francisco pay up to $900 a month to live in tiny "pods" - small boxes made of wood and steel just 1,2 meters high, reports Insider.
The pods, manufactured by Brownstone, can only fit one single bed. Residents have to make do without a fully equipped kitchen or washing machines. They can use five bathrooms.
Those interested can rent a capsule on a monthly basis. No deposit required.
One resident, tech startup founder Christian Lewis, who founded artificial intelligence company Spellcraft, said he enjoyed eight hours of restful sleep in the tiny space. He and others trying to start careers in artificial intelligence in San Francisco praised the housing, especially for the networking opportunities it offers.
On the subject: A family from Norway was looking for an earring and found relics from the Viking Age in their garden.
The company currently rents space for $500 in Bakersfield, $700 in San Francisco and $900 in Palo Alto.
“Our pods are equipped with custom lighting, curtains, temperature-controlled fans and other essential amenities,” the company's website states.
“In addition to your own bed, you get access to a home in an amazing location, access to a full kitchen and fully furnished common areas such as a living room and shared office,” said CEO James Stallworth.

Stallworth said he's received a lot of requests from people interested in AI.
Despite the cost, we booked all 28 capsules in October.
Rent in the tech hub of San Francisco is sky-high, with the average price for a one-bedroom apartment being $2200 per month on the Zillow real estate market.
Lewis shared photos of his experience in the X pod earlier this month.

“People get critical, but I don't understand why. I'm just trying to stay in the city of San Francisco without paying $4000 a month and without getting stabbed. I think this is a great decision for now,” he wrote. “There are a lot of cool people here too.”
