Airport imposes limit on duration of hugs

Dunedin Airport in New Zealand has sparked controversy around the world with a new sign imposing a three-minute limit on hugs in the drop-off area. The sign also says "for more tender greetings and farewells, please use the car park," writes CNN Travel.

A Facebook post announcing the innovation went viral.

Some social media users are outraged by the hugging curfew, while others are delighted that, given the overall rise in fees and fines, the airport still has a free drop-off zone.

Dunedin Airport CEO Daniel de Bono explained the reasons for the change in an interview with New Zealand radio RNZ.

Describing airports as “hotbeds of emotion,” he cited research that found a 20-second hug was enough to trigger a surge of oxytocin. Once you’ve hugged, make room for others who want to hug and get their dose of the love hormone.
