Airbnb is looking for five people to go on a fully paid monthly trip to Antarctica to study the human impact on the environment in an isolated continent.

The rental platform, in partnership with Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit law firm, is organizing an “Antarctic creative vacation,” which will include a trip to the region in December - where the group will join scientist Kirsty Jones-Williams on a research mission, writes CNBC.

In its press release, Airbnb describes this trip as "an unprecedented opportunity for five enthusiastic people to travel to the most distant continent of the Earth."

Five people who will be chosen as “civilian volunteer scientists” will collect snow samples and study how deep microplastics penetrated the Antarctic ecosystem.

No diplomas or rare skills are required for the position - Airbnb is looking for people with an “adventurous spirit, a passion for environmental care and a willingness to apply.”

However, candidates must be over 18 years old, be able to travel for a month from November to December this year. Candidates must also speak English.

Before traveling to Antarctica, participants will take courses in Chile to learn how to take samples in the field, as well as to master laboratory work and practice with equipment. They will return to Chile after completing field studies to analyze the results.

During the trip, volunteers will be given time to visit the South Pole and other Antarctic sites.

Private trips to Antarctica are usually very expensive: 10-day tours cost over 5000 dollars, and luxury options for such trips cost more than 50 000 dollars.

“This expedition will be hard work, requiring scientific rigor in ruthless winter conditions,” Jones-Williams said in a press release. “We are looking for passionate people who feel like citizens of the world who are happy to be part of the team, return home and share their results with the world.”

This Antarctic journey is part of a broader scheme being developed by Airbnb. This scheme is designed to encourage people to take career breaks to carry out projects of public importance. Previously, the company conducted a trip to Italy, where five people also went - they were engaged in the restoration of the Italian village of Grottole. More than 280 000 people from all over the world have applied for a three-month trip, which ended in August.
