A pioneering agricultural project in Richmond, Virginia, has launched the world’s first large-scale indoor vertical strawberry farm. The innovative facility, operated by Plenty Unlimited Inc., opened on September 24, 2024, and is set to revolutionize berry production and pave the way for a more sustainable future in agriculture.
Plenty Richmond is designed to grow over two million kilograms of strawberries a year. This impressive yield is achieved through advanced vertical farming technology, in which strawberries are grown on towers almost 10 meters high over an area of over three thousand square meters.

One of the most striking aspects of this new farm is its impact on the environment. The farm uses 97% less land than traditional farming and up to 90% less water. It is independent of nature’s rhythms, allowing it to produce berries with rich, natural flavors all year round.
The success of this vertical farm is based on years of research and development. Plenty spent a decade developing a proprietary modular growing system that is flexible enough to support a variety of crops, including strawberries. The farm uses AI to analyze more than 10 million different data points daily across 12 growing rooms, optimizing the environment at each stage of plant development.
The farm represents a unique collaboration between Plenty’s cutting-edge technology and Driscoll’s century-long berry breeding expertise. This partnership, regardless of seasonal constraints, aims to deliver consistently high-quality strawberries year-round. The first Driscoll berries from the farm will be available for sale in early 2025.
Beyond agricultural innovation, Plenty Richmond is also boosting the local economy. The facility is expected to create more than 60 jobs initially, with expansion plans to create more than 300 jobs as part of a projected $300 million investment in the 50-acre farm campus.
With populations growing and arable land shrinking, vertical farming offers a promising solution to future food security challenges. Plenty Richmond, with year-round production, is a proof of concept for large-scale, sustainable indoor farming.
