H-1B visa scam: company paid Indian workers 10 times less than promised

A technology firm in East Bay (San Francisco, California) promised several workers from India a salary of up to 8300 dollars a month, but after the company issued H-1B visas for them, they found out that they were going to pay them all 800 dollars a month .

According to the US Department of Labor, the company Cloudwick Technologies paid about 175 000 12 dollars to employees as compensation for their lost wages after it was determined that the organization violated the rules of the H-1B work visa program, writes Mercury News.

Investigators found that the company paid employees a salary that was significantly lower than the level of remuneration they were supposed to receive, based on their qualifications and the requirements of the H-1B program, in addition Cloudwick Technologies did illegal deductions from workers' wages.

Founder and CEO Cloudwick Mani Chabra said that the Department of Labor "distorted" some facts about how the company used workers on the H-1B program.

According to him, the issue of underpayment of wages arose due to changes in visa categories introduced by the Department of Labor. A spokesperson for the Department of Labor declined to clarify how the agency learned about the abuses in the company. A spokesman said many investigations begin with confidential complaints.

The Department also did not specify how long the workers had worked with Cloudwick, but the investigation continued from the beginning of 2015 to the end of 2017.

Visa H-1B, is intended for the hiring of skilled workers from other countries. Especially often this program is used by technology companies, inviting talented specialists from around the world.
