Illegal immigrants will be forbidden to live in social apartments with US citizens

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) proposes a new rule that will eliminate loopholes in the law that allow illegal immigrants to use state aid in the housing sector, writes The daily caller.

Thus, according to Article 214 of the Housing Act, non-US citizens cannot receive financial assistance for housing. However, the law had a loophole that allowed “mixed families” to claim help. That is, illegal migrants who lived with US citizens could receive financial assistance for housing.

Now HUD has developed a proposal that prohibits any illegal immigrant from living in subsidized housing, even if he is not a direct recipient of subsidies. This innovation can affect tens of thousands of families.

US citizens who receive a housing subsidy and live with an illegal immigrant will have to either comply with the new rule or leave the house.

All households will be checked using the SAVE program.

“Because of loopholes in HUD regulations, illegal immigrants have been able to take advantage of the free public housing that many of our citizens need. As undocumented immigrants attempt to cross our borders, we are sending the message that they will not be able to live off American social programs and taxpayer dollars,” said a HUD official.

According to HUD, there are now millions of Americans on government-financed waiting lists, as the department does not have enough resources to provide financial assistance to every family in need.
