Since June 1Applicants who fill out the DS-260 form will need to provide access to the social networks that they have used in the last 5 years prior to the application. This is not about logins and passwords, immigration agents are asked to provide them with links to their accounts or username.
The government believes that this system allows "more thoroughly evaluate the application."
While arguing the need for this innovation, the authorities said that terrorist groups, including ISIL, Al-Qaida and Al-Qaida affiliates, actively use social networks to spread official messages, beliefs and recruitment of potential members. State Department staff will use the information collected to evaluate applicants in accordance with existing rules and to increase security.

Consular employees were instructed not to violate confidentiality and not to interact with people through social networks. Social media identifiers have the same precautions that protect the personal information of the visa applicant.
The set of platforms and social network identifiers will not be used to deny visas on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, political opinion, gender or sexual orientation of the applicant. Consular officers will not request user passwords and will not attempt to violate any confidentiality measures that applicants may have applied on these platforms.

The rules on social networks also apply to people who fill out the DS-160 form (application for a non-immigrant visa).
- Earlier it was reported that most applicants for an American visa will have to show visa officers their social networks. The new rules entered into force on May 31.
- Innovation will affect most categories of visas - tourist, student, workers. The Department of State made exceptions for diplomatic visas and official delegations - applicants from these categories will not have to report their pages in social networks.
