Accelerating the issuance of green cards and the legalization of 'dreamers': what is Biden preparing to do

President-elect Joe Biden's new administration promises to focus on reducing waiting times for citizenship, providing automatic green cards to protected illegal immigrants and adding immigration judges to reduce delays in court hearings, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris said. Harris said the administration's bill provides for the immediate provision of green cards to immigrants under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and DACA program protection. She added that the administration will also try to shorten the time it takes to obtain US citizenship from 13 to eight years, making the naturalization process more efficient.

“This will be a smarter, more humane approach to immigration,” Harris said of the new government's legislative plans.

Harris also said they hope to add more judges to reduce the backlog of immigration cases, an issue that President Donald Trump has often used to justify stricter enforcement at the southern border.

Harris' comments come just as a group of undocumented immigrant activists from across the country plans to join with local religious leaders to demand a meeting with Biden. They plan to put pressure on him “to make good on his campaign promises and take immediate action,” the defense said.

“Reversing Trump's anti-immigrant policies is a start, but it cannot be the end of Biden's immigration plan,” said Pastor Chelsea Spiers and the Rev. Edwin Estevez, who lead Grace United Methodist Church in Wilmington.
