Dozens of people hospitalized due to severe turbulence during flight

The flight from Spain to Uruguay was forced to make an emergency landing in Brazil at around 1:2 local time on July 30. The airline said passengers suffered injuries of “varying severity,” the newspaper reported. Sky News.

The plane was forced to make an emergency landing after dozens of passengers were injured during severe turbulence. Following the incident on board an Air Europa flight from Madrid, 30 people were taken to hospital.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was scheduled to land in Montevideo, Uruguay, but instead made an emergency landing at Natal Airport in northeastern Brazil.

Photos and videos posted online, allegedly taken after the incident, show passengers receiving medical attention. Among them is a woman wearing a neck collar. In some photographs and videos you can see blood stains in the cabin.

Several seats and the ceiling of the plane were heavily damaged, and there were unconfirmed reports that one of the passengers was thrown into the overhead luggage compartment, where he became stuck.

“Our flight bound for Montevideo was diverted to Natal due to severe turbulence. The plane landed normally, and victims of varying degrees of severity are already receiving assistance,” the airline commented on the incident.

Health authorities in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte said in a statement that 30 passengers were taken to hospitals in Natal with "minor abrasions or orthopedic injuries."

It comes just weeks after a 73-year-old British man died after severe turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore.

Some scientists suggest that turbulence in flights may be increasing due to climate change.
