Washington Post correspondent arrested in Moscow: he quickened his pace at the sight of police

Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Washington Post correspondent and outspoken critic of the Kremlin, was arrested April 11 in Moscow on charges of disobeying police orders, reports BusinessInsider.

Vladimir Kara-Murza, Jr., former chairman of the board of the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom. Until February 2022, he hosted the Edge of the Week program on Ekho Moskvy radio. The Khamovnichesky Court of Moscow has appointed politician and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza an administrative arrest for 15 days on charges of disobedience to a police officer (Part 1 of Article 19.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation), as the press service of the court said. The politician's lawyer Vadim Prokhorov said that the court's decision would be appealed. Kara-Murza pleaded not guilty.

Vladimir Kara-Murza was detained the day before, on April 11, near his house and taken to the Khamovniki police station, where the politician spent the night awaiting trial. The reason for the detention of Kara-Murza was that he “behaved inappropriately at the sight of the police officers, changed the trajectory of movement, quickened his pace and tried to hide in response to their demand to stop.” This is stated in the police reports published by the lawyer.

His detention comes at a time when the Kremlin is ramping up arrests of journalists and anti-war activists.

“It seems to me that they are very irritated by his behavior and actions regarding the imposition of sanctions against Russia and for other reasons,” said Alexander Podrabinek, a prominent Russian human rights activist and supporter of Kara-Murza. “But most of all, I think they are outraged by his courage.”

In February 2021, Bellingcat and The Insider published an investigation alleging that FSB officers tried to kill Vladimir Kara-Murza twice - in May 2015 and in February 2017, when the politician was hospitalized with severe poisoning. According to investigators, the same FSB officers were involved in the poisoning of politician Alexei Navalny, writer Dmitry Bykov, and also monitored opposition figure Boris Nemtsov before his assassination.

Kara-Murza himself said that he was twice tried to be poisoned for criticizing Putin: once he was almost killed due to acute kidney failure, and the second attempt left him in a medically induced coma for several days.
