Miho will return: in Georgia, hackers used Saakashvili for a large-scale attack
Sites of Georgian state institutions and television channels were subjected to a large-scale hacker attack. It affected more than two thousand resources, including the websites of non-governmental organizations and private companies. Writes about this with the BBC.
In many cases, the websites' home pages were replaced with an image of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili with the caption "I will return."
In particular, court sites containing case files and personal data were subjected to cyber attacks.
The Imedi and Maestro TV channels were forced to stop broadcasting due to the actions of hackers.
“The network is paralyzed. We don’t receive a signal, we can’t go on air, we can’t use editing computers,” Irakli Chikhladze, head of the news service of the Imedi channel, said on Facebook.
The origin of the attack is not yet known. Georgian Interior Ministry launched an investigation.
"The scale of this attack is something we haven't seen before," said Professor Alan Woodward, a cybersecurity expert at the University of Surrey.

“Given the scale and nature of the targets, it is tempting to conclude that this attack could have been state-sponsored,” the professor said.
Journalists in the South Caucasus report that a version is being discussed in social networks that Russia may be involved in a hacker attack.
According to experts with whom correspondents spoke, the websites of Georgian government agencies are “poorly protected and vulnerable to attacks.”
Mikheil Saakashvili served as President of Georgia for two consecutive terms - from 2004 to 2013.

In 2015, becoming governor of the Odessa region of Ukraine, he renounced Georgian citizenship.
In 2017, Saakashvili was deprived of a Ukrainian passport, and then expelled from Ukraine. Saakashvili’s Ukrainian citizenship was restored in 2019 after Vladimir Zelensky took over as president.
In Georgia, several criminal cases have been opened against Saakashvili, which the politician calls politically motivated.
