A woman from Wisconsin got scratched and contracted a terrible disease: all her fingers and leg were amputated

The mother of three sons, Alesia Kennen from Rice Lake (Wisconsin), has been struggling for several years with a terrible disease - streptococcus. The cause of infection was an accidental scratch, which she received, unsuccessfully falling on the carpet. Writes about it Fox9.

Some time after receiving the scratch, the woman began to get very sick. In June 2015, instincts told her that the sharp pain under her right armpit was serious, and she immediately went to the hospital.

“The nurse and doctor knew immediately that something was wrong,” Kennen said.

A few days later, Kennen began to bleed internally. Her lungs were filled with fluid, vital organs began to fail, and her limbs turned black.

Doctors told her family to say goodbye to the woman.

“They told my family they didn’t know what was wrong with me and it was time to say goodbye,” Kennen recalls.

But when one of her sons started complaining of a sore throat, the doctors finally realized what they needed to do.

“Then they tested all three sons for strep throat (a type of strep throat) and all tested positive,” she said.

Kennen was diagnosed with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.

These are the same bacteria that her children got infected. They penetrated the woman’s blood through a small scratch from the carpet on her shoulder.

“Just a week later, a little scratch from the carpet almost cost me my life,” Kennen said.

19 June 2015 year Alesia lungs refused. She needed a blood transfusion due to internal bleeding, she also needed dialysis. The infection continued to spread. Then she had to amputate the phalanges of her fingers.

Finally, on 7 on August 2015, Kennen was recognized as healthy enough for her to go home.

Alexia continued to fight the infection, and on 30 on January 2016, she had to amputate her toes on both legs.

Dr. Steysen Marushek of the Hennepin County Medical Center (Minnesota) says the disease can spread very quickly, although it is quite rare.

Doctors say that most people had this infection at one time or another, but in very rare cases it leads to such consequences.

“Everyone has staph and streptococcus living on their skin, and if there's a wound, it's very easy to get infected and get toxic shock. But if you’re lucky, the immune system will cope with the bacteria,” Marushek said.

Although Kennen has no infection to date, the effects of toxic shock will be with her forever.

“I can’t believe how I got through all of this,” she said.

All fingers of her arms and legs were already amputated earlier, and her right leg below the knee had to be amputated in 2019, when the disease began to progress again.

She hopes that this rare disease will no longer harm her. Dr. Marushek says that there really is no reliable way to prevent an attack of toxic shock, but rinsing all cuts and scratches with soap and water immediately can help.
