Shooting in Brooklyn: one person killed, 11 injured

On the evening of Saturday, July 27, a shooting occurred at a playground in Brooklyn - one person was killed and 11 others were injured. At this time, the annual Old Timer's event was held there, which was attended by about two thousand people.

The shooting occurred shortly before 23: 00 on the playground of the Brownsville Recreation Center at the intersection of Christopher and Hegemann Avenues, writes CBS New York. By the time the arrows opened fire, the event was coming to an end.

According to New York City Police Assistant Chief Jeffrey Maddry, seven men and five women between the ages of 21 and 55 were victims of shooters.

One of the wounded, Denisa Merdo, told what had happened:

“As we turned to run, I heard two shots and felt something hit me in the back,” the woman said. “I was lying on the ground in panic. I couldn't breathe. My heart was pounding. I felt weak and couldn’t get up.”

21-year-old Merdo said she danced with friends at the celebration when it all began.

"For what? Why would anyone put other people's lives at risk? There were children, pregnant women, old people there.”

Murdo's mother said her daughter could have been killed if not for her clothing - the bullet was stopped by the tight seam of her bra.

“The bullet got stuck there, and when the emergency workers unclasped her bra, the bullet fell out,” the woman said.

One person did not survive the shooting - a 38-year-old man died at Brookdale Hospital. His name has not yet been announced. Another victim, authorities said, is in critical condition and "fighting for his life."

Nobody has been arrested in this case so far.

NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Kemper said evidence was collected and being processed and one weapon was found. Authorities said based on witness statements and ballistics, they believe there were "at least two shooters and two weapons."

Police Commissioner James O'Neill believes the shooting may have been gang-related, something he has said accounts for about half of the area's recorded shootings and violence. He also asked the public for help in the investigation.

"If anyone has video before the event, during the event - before the shooting, during the shooting or after, please forward it to us," O'Neill said.

The Old Timer's Event in Brownsville is held annually in the last week of July. It includes music performances and entertainment. On Friday night, about 5000 people visited the holiday and there were no incidents.

“I want to be clear that this tragedy does not define Brownsville or its residents,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

“It was a tragic end to a wonderful weekend. We will move on. This event will happen next year, but we always learn from mistakes,” O’Neill added.

Officials reported that about 100 police officers were present at the event. None of them was hurt.

“We all thought it was fireworks at first because we felt safe with the police present. In this case, who will think that this is shooting? And then, when you see the crowd running and screaming, when all the attention is on this, you already understand that this is shooting. And the first thing you look for is shelter,” said community activist Michael Thomas.
