The arrest of billionaire Jeffrey Epstein became the main political news of the week in the United States and has every chance of growing into the main political scandal of the decade if data about his high-ranking clients begins to emerge during the trial. CNN special correspondent Erica Orden writes, citing New York District Court documents, that during a search of Epstein's office, CDs with inscriptions like "young (name) + (name)" were found in his safe, and this could very well mean that the billionaire pimp was engaged not only and not so much in prostitution involving minors, but also in collecting incriminating evidence on his clients, especially from the political and business environment.

In this context, Mr. Epstein's background is particularly interesting. He avoided federal prosecution in 2007 and 2008 (when he was caught having sex with a minor and got off with an unprecedentedly lenient sentence under exceptional "billionaire" terms) thanks to a widely criticized plea deal, the lenient terms of which continue to cause problems for the Justice Department.

As The New York Times emphasizes, “before the plea deal, Mr. Epstein, a former hedge fund manager, was friends with Donald J. Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew, Duke of York,” and it cannot be ruled out that his wide the circle of acquaintances influenced the leniency shown by the American Themis.

Additional interest in this interpretation of events may also be related to the fact that the minor victims of Epstein, a few years ago, claimed that the American authorities had hidden evidence of his guilt. The situation can develop in the most bizarre way, and it cannot be excluded that now the fate of many American politicians is either in the hands of Epstein himself or in the hands of FBI investigators who have gained access to compromising materials that he has been collecting for many years. The matter can very easily become political: if prosecutors focus on clients connected with only one flank of the American political spectrum, this can seriously affect both the political process in the United States in general and the presidential election of the 2020 of the year in particular.

For a fairly significant number of voters may well decide not to vote for the candidate of the party involved in such a terrible scandal. The scenario in which the Epstein trial will turn into a presentation of all the compromising videos and photos of his clients, regardless of their political affiliation, seems unlikely, since the entire political and business class of the United States will resist such a development.

To make sure that a very broad political coalition will “fit in” with Epstein, it is enough to point out an interesting fact: a team of star lawyers who provided his incredibly profitable “plea deal” in 2007-2008 (and it was carried out with gross procedural violations), consisted of Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz (a well-known Democrat and ardent supporter of Hillary Clinton), Kenneth Starr - a Republican, ex-prosecutor, who was involved in drawing up an act of impeachment against Bill Clinton, and Jay Lifkowitz, a lawyer for the George W. Bush administration who served as the US special envoy for human rights in the DPRK.

When it comes to protecting the billionaire who organized a brothel with minors for his country's top politicians on his personal island, conflicts between Republicans and Democrats somehow give way to an amazing ability for productive interaction.

Perhaps Epstein’s case will indeed become a detonator for tectonic changes in American politics, but it’s hard to believe. Similar hopes were ten years ago, when Epstein was once taken red-handed. The most likely (though not the only possible) end of this story will be the quietest ending of the trial, from which not one of the truly high-ranking billionaire pedophile clients will suffer.
