As between the USA and the USSR: a new scandal broke out in Ukraine over a teleconference with Russia

The NewsOne TV channel announced the cancellation of the “We Need to Talk” teleconference between Moscow and Kiev, which was scheduled for July 12. According to channel representatives, the reason for the cancellation was threats.

“Our attempt to organize a platform for discussion of non-political issues by ordinary people who have never questioned the territorial integrity of Ukraine led to a massive information attack on our TV channel,” NewsOne said in a statement.

The channel added that NewsOne journalists and their families began to receive threats of physical violence.

Subsequently, the General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine (GPU) reported that because of the intention of NewsOne to hold a teleconference of the owner of the TV channel, as well as the host, they were summoned for questioning. In addition, the GPU is preparing a court ruling on the arrest of the broadcaster’s assets.

"Need to talk"?

The holding of a teleconference “We need to talk” between Ukraine and Russia was announced the day before by the presenter of the Rossiya 24 TV channel, Dmitry Kiselev.

On the Ukrainian side, it was supposed to be broadcast by the NewsOne channel, and Vasily Golovanov, the general producer of the TV channel, would be the host. The joint broadcast was scheduled for Friday, July 12.

Dmitry Kiselev, speaking about plans for a teleconference, said that “a frank conversation between ordinary people is long overdue” and compared the project to the bridge between the USA and the USSR, which took place in the 1980s.

“Now it will be the same, but between Russia and Ukraine,” Kiselev explained.

There was a strong reaction to the idea of ​​holding a teleconference in Ukraine: several political forces made critical statements, calling the project “an outright provocation.”

On Monday, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky made a statement regarding the teleconference, calling the “We Need to Talk” project “a cheap but dangerous PR stunt before the elections, the purpose of which is to divide Ukrainians into two camps.”

“The politicians will tell one camp: ‘Of course, let’s talk. We must forget the grievances, we are fraternal peoples, just think, thousands of dead guys,” the president said.

“In the other camp, politicians will call for indignation and, hiding behind patriotism, will go to earn points for the elections. Like, look how I heroically stand up to Putin’s godfather, whom, admittedly, I haven’t noticed for five years, but that’s how it is,” Zelensky continues.

“I appeal to all Ukrainians - we are not a camp. Now you are simply being manipulated by politicians who really want to get into parliament. There is only one difference between them: some will “rob”, and the second will “grabuvati” [rob in Ukrainian]. They all live beautifully and peacefully next door to each other - in one famous village near Kiev.”

Mr. Zelensky promised that in the near future there will be a reaction from the authorities to the actions of the NewsOne and 112-Ukraine TV channels - they are part of the Novosti media holding, which is associated with the Ukrainian politician and godfather of the head of Russia Vladimir Putin, Viktor Medvedchuk.

At the same time, the president addressed the journalists of these channels: “Someone bought the channels, but not you. You are not property, not Medvedchuk’s collection, not Rabinovich’s servants, you are the fourth estate. You are also servants of the people."

At the same time, the president’s ally, acting chairman of the SBU Ivan Bakanov proposed introducing sanctions against the NewsOne and 112-Ukraine TV channels - in his own words, “to prevent the aggressor country from implementing an anti-Ukrainian information campaign.”

“This is our journalistic duty”

Even in the morning, explaining the need for a teleconference, the NewsOne TV channel talked about “journalistic duty.”

“Today, when Ukrainian soldiers are dying every day, and the politicians of the previous and current government continue to be inactive, we consider it our journalistic duty to enter into such an open dialogue between the peoples of Ukraine and Russia,” the channel’s statement said.

“We want to force politicians to negotiate for peace. “We Need to Talk” is a teleconference between ordinary people from Ukraine and Russia without politics, without politicians. Everyone, on their part, should take a step to end the war,” NewsOne added.
