Football coach rapist sentenced to death
A former high school football coach convicted of kidnapping and killing an 10-year-old girl in Missouri, was sentenced to death, writes New York Post.
District Judge Thomas Mountjoy sentenced 49-year-old Craig Wood to death. In November, Wood was found guilty of murder in the first degree in November, but the jury could not then decide whether to sentence him to death or to life imprisonment without the right to parole.
Before Wood learned of his punishment, Mountjoy dismissed claims from Wood’s lawyers who sought a new trial and called the judge’s death sentence unconstitutional.
Wood, in front of witnesses in the afternoon, kidnapped 10-year-old Hayley on a street in Springfield, Missouri. He took her to his home, where he raped and then shot him in the head. The body of the child was found in his basement.
