Trump, who tweeted Tuesday that Wednesday would be a "big day" for national security, is expected to impose a months-long ban on refugees entering the United States, except for religious minorities oppressed in their home countries. The restrictions will remain in effect until a more stringent control system is introduced.

By another decree, Trump will block the issuance of visas to citizens of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, said assistants and experts who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Republican president, who took office last Friday, is expected to sign the first orders at the Department of Homeland Security, which is responsible for immigration and border security.

During the election campaign, Trump initially proposed to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the US, which, according to him, would protect Americans from jihadist attacks.

After that, Trump, like US Senator Jeff Sessions, appointed by him as Attorney General, said that they would focus on restrictions for countries whose migrants could pose a threat to the country, rather than banning the entry of persons professing a particular religion.

Most Trump supporters criticized the decision of his predecessor Barack Obama to increase the number of Syrian refugees in the US, as they fear the likelihood of attacks.
