A list of the fifteen most influential Jews in the world who left a significant mark on the outgoing year 2016 was published on Friday, December 23, under the auspices of the Israeli Ministry of Diaspora Affairs. The material was published as a special supplement to the most popular newspaper in Israel, Israel Hayom (Israel Today), and the right-wing newspaper Makor Rishon (Primary Source).

First place was given to the great musician and performer Leonard Cohen (82), who died in the fall of 2016. Also on the list is “fresh” Nobel Prize winner in literature Bob Dylan (Robert Alan Zimerman). Among the losses of this year, a Nobel laureate was also named Elie Wiesel.

The fourth on this prestigious list was the Prime Minister of Ukraine, 38-year-old Vladimir Groysman. The article about him says that Groysman is the grandson of a Jew who miraculously escaped during the Holocaust by pretending to be dead in a pit among those shot. It is also indicated that while holding the posts of mayor of Vinnitsa, deputy prime minister of Ukraine and speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, he never hid his Jewish roots and came to the synagogue on religious holidays.

The compilers of the rating report that some of Groysman’s relatives repatriated to Israel, now living in the city of Ashdod. It is interesting that the compilers of the list wrote the name of the head of the government of Ukraine in Hebrew precisely in the Ukrainian sound “Volodymyr”, and not in the Russian version “Vladimir”.
