Nine Problems That Vaseline Solves: You Have No Idea How Useful It Is
Forget about expensive specialized products. Good old Vaseline can cope with many common troubles. The publication tells about nine ways to use Vaseline Money Talks News.
In 1859, a chemist named Robert Cheesebrough came to Titusville, Pennsylvania. He noticed that oil field workers were using something they called "rod wax" to treat minor skin lesions.
Rod wax was a byproduct of oil drilling. Cheesebrough became so intrigued by the substance that he began to purify it. When he introduced his finished product to the public, he called it Wonder Jelly. In 1872, the product was named Vaseline. The word is derived from the German wasser (water) and the Greek oleon (oil).

Vaseline is a mixture of natural waxes and mineral oils. It has dozens of uses. Here are a few everyday problems that can be solved with regular Vaseline.
Water rings
Have you ever noticed a water ring left by a wet glass on a table or other wooden surface? Rub a little Vaseline into the stain using circular motions. Sabrina Firman, vice president of luxury cleaning service New York's Little Elves, told Architectural Digest that if the ring is stubborn, you can leave the Vaseline on overnight.
Pesky Squirrels
Use Vaseline to keep squirrels away from bird feeders mounted on posts. Smear it on the post and the squirrels won't be able to climb the slippery surface.
Creaking hinges
Are your door or furniture hinges creaking or moving stiffly? Vaseline works just as well as the special lubricant WD-40 - but without the smell and dirt.
"Vaseline penetrates the hinge and holds well. It doesn't run off and make a mess like oil or other lubricants," explains Family Handyman.
Corns
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a small amount of petroleum jelly to areas of skin prone to calluses.
This will help reduce friction when your body rubs against your skin or fabric, thereby preventing blisters.
The scent doesn't last long
Before applying perfume or cologne, lightly rub Vaseline onto your pulse points or where you're applying the scent. This will help the scent last longer, says Dr. Travis Stork, former host of The Doctors.
"It holds the scent on the skin better than just spraying the perfume directly on the skin," explains Stork.
Sensitive Dog Paws
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends applying Vaseline to your dog's tender paw pads before winter walks.
"Massaging Vaseline or other protective products into the paw pads before going outside helps protect them from salt and chemicals," explains the nonprofit.
Rough, dry or cracked skin
Very dry skin on your feet? Apply Vaseline right before bed, then put on socks. It feels weird at first, but you'll get used to it. In the morning, you'll be amazed at how soft your skin is.
Are your lips dry and flaky? Make a scrub by mixing Vaseline with sugar. You can make a large batch and rub it all over your body to remove dead skin cells.
Are your nostrils chapped from blowing your nose all the time when you have a bad cold? Gently apply a little Vaseline to moisturize dry skin and protect it from friction.

Make-up Removal
Out of makeup remover? Or want to try another method? Gently rub a little Vaseline into your face, then wipe off with a soft cloth or tissue.
Dermatologist Mona Gohara, of Hamden, Connecticut, told Allure magazine, "It's lightweight and glides on, so makeup comes off easily without damaging the skin."
Risk of eczema
Citing a study published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics, the Mayo Clinic reported in 2017 that applying petroleum jelly to a newborn's skin daily during the first six months of life may reduce the risk of developing eczema.
