88-Ohio veteran recaptures baby from pit bull with Christmas decoration

An 88-year-old Ohio veteran used a toy soldier—an outdoor Christmas decor toy—to fight a pit bull that attacked a 10-year-old girl.

Leonard Miller was at his house in Perry Township when he heard someone screaming and knocking on his front door, tells Cleveland19. Miller’s neighbor, an 13-year-old girl, told him that her 10-year-old sister was attacked by a pit bull who lives in their family.

Miller grabbed the Christmas decoration, a 3-foot-tall plastic toy soldier, and ran to his neighbor's house.

When Miller went inside, he heard the girl scream and was horrified to see a pit bull bite a child over his shoulder. It was then that Miller began to beat the dog with a toy soldier.

“The dog was just shaking it and growling, I hit the animal I don’t know how many times, but the dog wasn’t bothered by any of it,” Miller said.

“Then I started hitting the pit bull on the back with a toy, and the dog let go of the little girl,” the man added.

The girls ran out of the house, Miller slowly stepped back, making sure that the dog did not attack him. After that, he called the police and an ambulance. When the paramedics arrived, they told Miller that he had saved the girl’s life. Rescuers called him a hero.

“I don’t like being called a hero,” Miller said.

But an Army veteran who served in the Korean War is certainly a hero—one who stepped into a dangerous situation and changed it.

Miller was told that everything would be fine with the girl, and that the doctors were able to save her hand. What happened to the pit bull is still unknown.
