How to Choose a Car for a Teenager: Six Safe Used Cars Under $10,000
Experts from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Consumer Reports analyzed thousands of used vehicles. They identified six midsize crossovers and SUVs that successfully passed rigorous crash tests and met pedestrian detection system requirements. These vehicles start at around $6000, according to Money Talks.
If you're looking for a safe used SUV (high-riding vehicle) for a teenager who just got their driver's license and expect to spend under $10,000, the IIHS and Consumer Reports have a list. They recently published a selection of 45 used cars and crossovers that typically cost under $10,000, perform well in crash tests, and feature high-quality headlights and automatic emergency braking systems with pedestrian detection.
"We create this annual list specifically for teens because driving poses higher risks for them," said IIHS Senior Research Scientist Rebecca Wiest. "However, the recommendations are applicable to drivers of any age who want to balance cost and safety."

"A teenager's first car is a significant milestone in their life," noted Emily Thomas, Deputy Director of Auto Safety at Consumer Reports. "So our information is helpful whether you're buying a car specifically for them or deciding which family car they'll drive. These lists help parents make decisions confidently and without fear for safety."
