54% of millionaires believe that you can buy happiness for money
Money provides a lot of things that can make you happy, including peace of mind, a sense of success and the freedom to live as you like. Such conclusions were made by researchers of Boston Private, who conducted a survey "The Why Of Wealth", in which 300 respondents took part with a fortune of $ 1 million to $ 20 million, writes CNBC.
When respondents were asked what wealth is, 54% said it was happiness, and 65% said it was peace of mind.
Money alone cannot bring happiness, satisfaction or success, but it can facilitate a lifestyle that can become more comfortable and bring satisfaction.
“Beyond the intangible emotional and psychological benefits, people view wealth as protective – it allows them to feel free, provides a happier family life, and allows them to engage in social and leisure activities,” the report says.
When asked what wealth allows them to do, 70% of respondents said that it allows them to feel financial independence and freedom. Half of the respondents answered that wealth makes their family life happier, and 44% gives them the opportunity to travel frequently.
For some, wealth means being able to be your own master. It happened with Tom Aley, an entrepreneur whose income allowed him to leave a well-paying job and start his own business.
“I loved being independent and I was able to do more. I no longer needed to be subordinate to someone,” Ali told the publication The New York Times.
For others, money means being able to become a force of good. Elizabeth Galtbut Perelman decided to use her wealth to create a company that invests in businesses that are founded by women.
“For me, growing up, wealth meant being able to create the change you want to see in the world,” she said.
But the accumulation of wealth also leads to regrets. Almost half of the respondents said that if they could change something, they would spend more time with the family.
Among other common regrets: the best care for your health (27%), follow your desires (24%), higher education (22%).
But even if you are not a multimillionaire, then ways to spend money can bring more peace of mind and happiness.
“In terms of happiness, time is the main currency. What really matters for your daily mood is how you manage your time, says university psychology professor British Columbia Elizabeth Dunn.
Buying new clothes may not bring happiness, but spending money on things that save you time can help you feel less stressed.
In one study, Dunn conducted an experiment by giving people $ 40 for two weeks.
During the first week, people had to buy something material, and in the next week they had to spend the money to buy themselves more free time. Examples of time savings include hiring someone else to mow the lawn or clean the house, taking a taxi instead of public transportation, or shopping online.
People said they felt happier when they spent money to save time.
