5 large companies hiring new employees during the crisis with coronavirus

The COVID-19 pandemic forced enterprises to shut down, affecting millions of workers. But some companies require new employees due to increased consumer demand, reports USA Today.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection 2019-nCoV in the United States exceeded 22 thousand, at least 278 people died, according to Johns Hopkins University, citing its own estimates of federal and local statistics.

Restaurants and other retailers have shut down or reduced the number of services that contribute to the spread of the virus.

An analysis of Goldman Sachs reports shows that this week, due to an increase in layoffs during the outbreak of the virus, weekly applications for unemployment benefits can reach a record 2,4 million.

But on the contrary, some companies require more workers in order to keep up with the demand for their services.

Amazon

The retail giant said it plans to hire 100 workers during the pandemic to help with online deliveries across the country. The company is temporarily raising its minimum wage to $17 an hour.

Domino's Pizza

The pizza chain plans to hire up to 10 workers, including delivery staff, pizza bakers and customer service representatives. “Our corporate and franchise stores want to not only feed people, but also provide opportunities for those currently looking for work. Especially those who have been hit hard by the contraction of the restaurant industry,” said Domino’s Pizza CEO Richard Ellison.

Kroger

In an interview with CNBC, Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen said that 2000 people were hired in a chain store due to increased demand due to the 2019-nCoV coronavirus. And they still have 10 thousand vacancies in warehouses, factories and in stores.

Pepsi

The drinks giant said it plans to hire 6000 new full-time employees in the coming months. “Our frontline workers are the people who sort your favorite bags of crisps. These include employees who deliver products to stores and those who produce them in factories across the country. They are the backbone of PepsiCo Foods, and we appreciate their heroic efforts,” PepsiCo Foods North America CEO Stephen Williams said in a statement.

Walmart

The world's largest retailer says it plans to hire 150 new employees by the end of May. Walmart says the jobs are temporary, but many of the workers hired will transition into permanent positions. “We know that millions of Americans who would normally be working right now are temporarily out of work, even though we are seeing strong demand in our stores,” Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement.
