Vaccination against COVID-19 has become a new resume: thanks to it, people are hired, and without it they are fired
The number of vacancies requiring employees to get vaccinated before applying is on the rise, with more and more firms saying they are firing existing employees who refuse to get vaccinated. Axios.
Why is it important: The business sector plays a key role in increasing vaccination rates in the United States. It will become more difficult for those looking to avoid vaccination as vaccination status increasingly affects livelihoods.
Judging by the numbers: The proportion of vacancies per million on Indeed that require vaccinations has grown by 242% over the past month, from about 1700 to over 4000. Although this is clearly a very small number of proposals, it continues to grow.
- For example, 2% of personal care and domestic staff jobs require vaccinations, and 1,5% of childcare jobs do the same. This is one of the sectors with the highest proportion of advertisements requiring vaccination.
- In Arizona, 1,3% of job openings required a vaccine, more than any other state.
- “Some companies may also require vaccinations but not include them in job descriptions,” says Indeed economist Anne-Elisabeth Konkel. “Given the political nature of vaccinations, some employers may be wondering whether to include it in their job descriptions.”
- Job searches on Indeed, with jobseekers clearly looking for jobs that do not require vaccinations, have grown 20x in the past month. Most of these requests are for health care jobs that do not require vaccinations, Konkel said.
What is happening: the government also intervenes. More companies can be expected to include vaccinations in their job listing requirements as the upcoming government regulations on vaccines in the workplace become clearer.
The Biden administration has instructed the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to develop an interim rule that companies with 100 or more employees must either require vaccinations or conduct weekly testing. This rule will affect 80 million US workers.
For some jobs, testing will not be enough. The government intends to introduce vaccination requirements for all healthcare workers. On top of that, most federal employees and millions of government contractors have already been told they must get vaccinated.
On the subject: In California, schoolchildren are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19
A federal appeals court ruled Monday that New York City can require all of its teachers to be vaccinated — the deadline for receiving the first dose is Friday.
Games of contradictions: Many companies are raising questions such as who will pay for testing and how OSHA will determine which companies should and should not. And some Republican lawmakers are urging businesses to resist or openly rebel.
But many other firms have - and continue to - promote vaccination requirements.
The list includes Google, Facebook, Netflix, Walt Disney Co., Morgan Stanley, Lyft, and The Washington Post.
According to a new Gartner survey of legal and human resources employees at companies across the country, 46% of firms plan to issue vaccine prescriptions, 36% said they were still unsure, and 17% said they would not issue a prescription.

15% of companies said they fire those who refuse to get vaccinated.
What's next: New vaccination rules could intensify the "big wave of layoffs." According to Gartner, about 69% of firms fear an increase in staff turnover due to vaccine prescriptions.
