Three US citizens detained in Venezuela on suspicion of plotting against government
Three U.S. citizens have been arrested on suspicion of plotting to destabilize the Venezuelan government, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said on Sept. 14. The Venezuelan government said the U.S. government was involved in the operation. Cabello said the men were Central Intelligence Agency agents, according to ABC News.
"We can confirm the detention of a U.S. service member and have unconfirmed information that two additional U.S. citizens have been detained in Venezuela," a State Department spokesman said.
"Any allegations of U.S. involvement in a plot to overthrow Maduro are categorically false. The United States continues to advocate for a democratic solution to the political crisis in Venezuela," the statement said.
According to the Minister of the Interior, in addition, two Spanish citizens and a Czech citizen were arrested.

Relations between the United States and Venezuela remain tense. One of the most recent incidents, for example, was the seizure of a Boeing 2023 by the United States in August 747. The plane, owned by the Venezuelan state airline, was used by the Venezuelan government for various international operations, including transporting goods and personal needs of government officials.
The seizure was prompted by sanctions imposed on Venezuela and its state-owned companies. The US accused Venezuela of violating those sanctions and said the plane was being used illegally to circumvent international restrictions. Washington claimed the vehicle was being used to transport goods, particularly oil, to circumvent sanctions.
The seizure of the plane was part of a broader U.S. strategy to weaken the economic power of the Maduro regime and support opposition forces in the country. The incident showed that the U.S. continues to actively monitor assets linked to the Venezuelan state and prevent attempts to circumvent economic sanctions.
The United States has been actively supporting Venezuela's opposition to the regime of Nicolás Maduro, which was deemed illegitimate by many international players after disputed elections in 2018.
In 2019, the United States, along with dozens of countries, officially recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s interim president, an attempt to put international pressure on Maduro and delegitimize his rule.
The United States has imposed severe economic sanctions on Venezuela and its state-owned enterprises, such as the oil company PDVSA, in an effort to cut revenues for the Maduro regime and force it to negotiate with the opposition.
The US administration froze Venezuelan assets in American banks and handed over control of some of them to Guaido's representatives so that the opposition would have financial support.
The United States provides significant humanitarian assistance to the Venezuelan people through international organizations and NGOs that work with the opposition. This includes food and medical supplies amid the economic and social crisis.

The United States is actively using diplomatic channels to build an international coalition against the Maduro regime. Washington supports the efforts of the Organization of American States (OAS) and other international forums to isolate the Maduro government. American leaders openly declare Maduro’s illegitimacy at international summits and forums. The United States also supports the opposition at the UN, OAS, and other intergovernmental organizations.
