2020 continues to amaze: in Florida, a bird ate an alligator

A Florida wildlife photographer captured a rare sighting of a bird eating an alligator. It happened on a lake northwest of Orlando. Writes about this NBC News.

Shelley Gilliam said she was on Dec. 5 on the north shore of Lake Apopka, Florida's fourth largest. It is one of the popular bird watching destinations in the state.

An adult great blue heron caught a young alligator and flew with it to the lake, where Gilliam managed to photograph it. The heron swallowed the reptile whole.

“Yes, a bird can eat an alligator,” Gilliam said.

“Just wow! — Gilliam wrote. “Nature continues to amaze me every day.”

Great blue herons are one of the most abundant large waterfowl in the United States, although they were once widely hunted for their size.

Their diet is described as “very varied and adaptable” and includes insects, rodents, birds and of course fish.

These birds often hunt for prey. without leaving the car - they stand along the coastline and wait for the fish to swim past, and then strike quickly with their beak.

Alligators are not mentioned in the diet of the great blue heron, but the bird is known to occasionally eat frogs, salamanders, turtles and snakes.
