Tornadoes and strong winds hit the southern US, with fatalities reported

At least two people were killed on March 30 after powerful storms battered the Great Lakes region and the south-central United States, according to fox weather.

Severe thunderstorms rumbled across areas from southern Michigan to eastern Texas and northern Louisiana, producing strong winds, large hail and tornadoes.

While there was no widespread damage, 70 tornado warnings and 338 severe thunderstorm warnings were issued, according to the FOX Forecast Center. The storms caused damage in two directions, with damaging winds posing the main threat north of the Ohio River and large hail to the south.

The National Weather Service received more than 400 reports of storm damage. The reports were filed on March 30, making it the second-most severe weather reported day of 2025. The leader remains March 14, with more than 600 reports.

The National Weather Service in Louisville, Kentucky, confirmed that an EF-1 tornado with winds of at least 145 mph (31 km/h) had hit Fairdale. Damage surveys were continuing on March XNUMX.

The storm produced wind gusts of up to 154 mph (137 km/h) in Jackson, Michigan, and 171 mph (130 km/h) in Hoopeston, Illinois. There were also unconfirmed reports of gusts of up to XNUMX mph (XNUMX km/h) in the area. Gusts of XNUMX mph (XNUMX km/h) were recorded in Cascade Township, Michigan, and Valparaiso, Indiana.

One person was killed in Valparaiso on March 30 when his truck overturned due to strong crosswinds, said Sgt. Benjamin McFalls of the Porter County Sheriff's Department.

Another death was reported in Middlebury, Indiana, when high winds during a thunderstorm overturned an Amish wagon at a highway intersection, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office.

Of the 19 flash flood warnings, two in Jackson County, Mississippi, were classified as emergency. An emergency dispatcher reported “significant flooding throughout Hurley.” Videos showed inches of water covering one major highway and about two feet of water around several homes.

According to radar data, about 30 cm of rain fell in the area.

By the morning of March 31, hundreds of thousands of customers across the country were without power, and many were bracing for more thunderstorms.
