196 degrees below zero: how to learn to treat cancer in Israel

A 60-year-old man from northern Israel had been battling colon cancer for several years, and the disease had recently metastasized to his liver. The consultation prescribed cryotherapy to the patient - freezing cancer cells using a technology developed by an Israeli company. Icecure medical from Caesarea special appliance.

In the process of cryotherapy, the doctor inserts a disposable needle into the affected organ and injects liquid nitrogen at a temperature of 196 degrees below zero. The resulting ice ball freezes out the nearby cancer cells without harming the affected organ and without pain for the patient.

“The new technology allows us to destroy the affected cells with cold, instead of cutting out part of the organ,” said Dr. Evgeniy Solomonov, the first in Israel to perform this operation. — Such treatment can replace surgical intervention, at least in certain situations. The frozen area is limited, so damage to the body is minimal. The new method makes it possible to completely clear the liver of cancer cells.”

Extreme cold allows you to eliminate cancerous tissue of a certain density and avoid the removal of healthy tissue of an organ or even an entire organ. No tissue, healthy or cancerous, can withstand such low temperatures. When liquid nitrogen is injected, ice crystals form, breaking the cell membrane of the cancerous tissue, followed by its death, after which leukocytes get to work - they cleanse the body of dead cancer cells.

Recent studies have shown that after cryotherapy, the immune system is reborn and neutralizes the remaining cancer cells. The technique was previously tested on patients with breast and kidney cancer, in Israel it was first used to treat liver cancer. This type of tumor is considered dangerous for the patient and very difficult to treat.

Before starting cryotherapy, Doctor Solomonov removed part of the cancerous tumor - the one that was difficult to approach - and froze the remaining part to destroy metastases. In simpler cases, the operation is performed even without anesthesia and incisions, and the patient can be discharged a few hours after the procedure.

However, it is necessary to ensure that the disease has not returned, so the patient should undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) therapy every few months - like all patients recovering from cancer surgery.
