17 million animals: Denmark will kill all minks due to coronavirus

Denmark, the world's largest producer of mink fur, plans to eradicate all minks in the country to contain the mutated form of coronavirus. CNN.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Wednesday 4 November that the decision was made with a "heavy heart", but it was necessary on the basis of a recommendation from the health authorities.

“The virus has mutated in mink. The mutated virus has spread to people,” Frederiksen explained.

The Statens Serum Institut, a Danish body in Copenhagen dealing with infectious diseases, has found 5 cases of the virus in mink farms and 12 — in people who have shown decreased sensitivity to antibodies, she said. Allowing the virus to spread could potentially limit the effectiveness of future vaccines.

“We have a great responsibility to our own population, but with this mutation being discovered, we have an even greater responsibility to the rest of the world,” Frederiksen said.

According to the authorities, there are between 15 and 17 million minks in Denmark. Coronavirus outbreaks on the country's mink farms continue despite repeated attempts to eradicate infected animals since June.

A million minks within an eight-mile (8,4 km) radius of suspected or confirmed infestations on the farm were destroyed in October. Danish police, army and militia will be used to speed up the process, Frederiksen said. When infected minks were found, they were also killed in Spain and the Netherlands.

The Prime Minister announced that new restrictions will be introduced in parts of Denmark to contain the spread of the mutated virus, including the municipalities of Hjorring, Frederikshavn, Bronderslev, Jammerbugt, Westimmerland, Thisted and Leso.

“Unfortunately, residents of these municipalities must be prepared for further restrictions in the near future,” the prime minister warned.
