15 Ukrainian eco-startups that conquer the world
Dishes, which can be eaten, a toothbrush made of paper, blinds with solar panels, electronic card recycling and much more. Voice of America talks about 15 Ukrainian startups in the field of ecology, clean technologies and rational consumption.
RECYCLE MAP - map of waste disposal points
Recycle Map is an interactive map disposal points for various types of waste. The goal of the project is “to popularize waste sorting and recycling as an integral part of modern life.” On this map you can find out where in Ukraine you can donate batteries, cardboard, accumulators, PET bottles, organic waste, glass containers and other types of waste.
FoodBiopack: Biodegradable and Edible Packaging and Utensils
Ukrainian startup FoodBIOPack develops biodegradable and edible packaging, dishes and cutlery. According to the developers, the basis of all products are natural food components that contain proteins, polysaccharides and fats.
The startup team took part in numerous competitions, conferences and exhibitions in Europe and Ukraine, including the University Startup World Cup-2018 competition in Copenhagen (Denmark), the Nordic Organic Food Fair exhibition in Malmö (Sweden). In December 2018, the startup received a grant of 500 hryvnia ($000) from Carlsberg Ukraine.
ECOISME: energy saving system
The Ecoisme device connects to an electrical switchboard and Wi-Fi network and measures the power consumption in a house. All energy consumption data comes to the mobile application and helps the owner to control consumption.
The company cooperates with such famous brands as T-mobile, Virgin Media and Bosch. Ecoisme has received wide recognition, many awards (winner of the CES Best of Innovation Award and EDF Pulse) and investments (Deutsche Telekom and Liberty Global).
VALENTIN FLETCH: paper from fallen leaves
Ukrainian schoolboy Valentin Frechka found a way to make paper from fallen leaves and won gold at the “Genius Olympics” in the United States, a competition held between students from different countries in several categories.
EFFA: paper disposable toothbrush
Ukrainian startup Effa has created an ecological toothbrush made from recycled paper. According to the developers, Effa brushes are primarily useful for those who travel a lot and do not want to harm nature. Effa recently completed an accelerator program in New York.
The startup was also selected for the business program of one of the largest paper manufacturers - Stora Enso. The company was named one of the top five climate startups in the world at the Clim@ competition in Germany in 2018.
RE-BEAU: recycled plastic jewelry
Ukrainian designer Maria Sorokina creates jewelry from recycled plastic. Re-beau products of the year supplemented the images of models at Ukrainian Fashion Week in collaboration with the brand Roussin.
FLUSHWAVE: technical water reuse system
Flushwave is a system that allows you to reuse waste water from sinks, bathtubs and showers to flush your toilet. According to the founder of the project, Valery Yarosh, the product is currently being tested, as well as the installation of systems in one of the restaurants in Kyiv. The project participated in the “Startup Breakthrough” competition at the Tech StartUp School of the National University “Lviv Polytechnic” in 2018 and in the clean technology competition ClimateLaunchPad 2017.
GO TO-U: international platform with charging stations for electric vehicles
Go To-U has created an online platform that brings together environmentally responsible businesses that offer free electric vehicle charging services to their customers. The platform already covers about 12 000 charging stations in Ukraine, Austria, Portugal and other European countries, Thailand and Kazakhstan.
The startup's goal is to reduce carbon dioxide (C02) pollution by quickly popularizing electric vehicles. Go To-U has also been selected for the IMPACT Connected Car acceleration program, which is funded under the EU's Horizon2020.
SOLARGAPS: blinds with solar panels
A Ukrainian company has developed blinds with solar panels SolarGaps. These smart blinds generate clean energy thanks to photovoltaic modules. One square meter of SolarGaps can produce 100 watts per hour, says the Online company.
STOCK-FACTORY: online distribution platform for problem products
The service helps to quickly sell or transfer to charity high-quality products in general, in which packaging is damaged or missing or the expiration date is about to expire. So a startup contributes to the reduction of the destruction of goods in retail chains.
The Stock-Factory team won the global competition of “green” business ideas Climate Launchpad in the “Decision Making Systems and Finance” category and received 5000 euros (approximately $5690) for the development of the project.
UGRID: energy microgrid construction service
Ukrainian startup UGrid has developed a service for building energy microgrids based on conventional networks. This will help local energy supply organizations to reduce the use of fossil energy sources and avoid overpaying for energy supply. The startup won the Ukrainian national selection of the international ClimateLaunchpad-2018 competition and got the opportunity to represent Ukraine at the Global Grand Final in Edinburgh.
TOKA: network of electric stations
TOKA is a network of publicly accessible charging stations for electric vehicles. The company’s main goal is to make owning an electric car as comfortable as a car with an internal combustion engine, the website says. This is how the developers want to encourage drivers to switch to environmentally friendly transport.
The startup took the second place in the national selection of the ClimateLaunchpad-2018 competition and was one of the representatives of Ukraine at the Global Grand Final in Scotland.
NUKA: perpetual notebook and perpetual pencil
But the Ukrainian startup Nuka believes in a model of reasonable consumption. At the 2019 CES in Las Vegas, the startup unveiled a notepad that never runs out and a pencil that never writes off. The eternal notebook can be rewritten an infinite number of times, and with the help of a special napkin it is easy to remove all the inscriptions, co-founder of the startup Ekaterina Mikhalko told the Voice of America. And the pencil does not need to be sharpened, and it will never run out, she adds.
WATER CLOUD UA: a device for collecting water from the air
Ukrainian startup Water Cloud UA invented a device that literally extracts water from the air. This is a device that collects condensed water from the air. The startup took the third place at the Falling Walls Lab Kyiv 2017 interdisciplinary scientific conference.
JOLLYLOOK: an environmentally friendly camera for taking snapshots
Ukrainians have developed a folding camera, Jollylook, made entirely from recycled paper and cardboard. No electronics - just paper, a couple of lenses and mini cartridges for instant photos. Manufacturers claim that they use less materials than in the packaging of a normal camera. The startup raised $377 on Kickstarter.
