“Ernst Neizvestny has died. I can’t say anything yet, tears are coming. Stunned. Depressed. This is a huge loss - for Russian culture, for everyone who knew this extraordinary person,” Sulkin wrote.

In 1976, Neizvestny, for political reasons, emigrated first to Switzerland, and in 1977 to the USA.

In 1962, the sculptor was expelled from the Union of Artists of the USSR after a conflict with state leader Nikita Khrushchev during his visit to the exhibition in the Moscow Manege.

Ernst Neizvestny was an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts, laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation and the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 3rd degree, which was awarded to him for outstanding achievements in the development of fine arts.

Ernst Neizvestny was born in 1925 in Sverdlovsk. In 1943, he volunteered for the front, and was later awarded orders and medals as a member of the Second World War.

After the collapse of the USSR, Neizvestny visited Russia from time to time. Among other things, a 15-meter memorial “Mask of Sorrow”, created by him, was installed in Magadan, dedicated to the memory of the victims of political repression in the Soviet Union.
