Which states have the longest-living retirees, and where do they die early?
One of the main benefits of retirement is the feeling that you're finally in control of your life. When your job no longer ties you to a specific location, you can choose where to live, how much to spend, and how to optimize your expenses. But there's one factor you can't completely control: how much time you have left to live out those years, writes Money Talks.
No one can accurately predict their life expectancy, no matter how much they might want to. Of course, a healthy diet and physical activity play a role. For example, one study found that engaging in physical activity two to four times the recommended moderate level (150–300 minutes per week, including walking and light exercise) reduces the risk of death from any cause by 26–31%.
However, even with a healthy lifestyle, the exact life expectancy remains unknown.

But statistics are a stubborn thing.
It shows that in some states, people live significantly longer than in others. Life expectancy is influenced by the quality of healthcare, pollution levels, climate, and other regional factors.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, life expectancy after age 65 is 19,5 years, on average. This means that Americans who live to age 65 live an average of 84,5 years.
The latest annual report from the federal National Death Statistics System ranks all 50 states and the District of Columbia by life expectancy after age 65.
Here are the states where this rate is highest:
- Hawaii - 20,5 years after age 65
- Connecticut - 19,8
- New York - 19,8
- Massachusetts - 19,7
- California - 19,7
- Minnesota - 19,6
- New Jersey - 19,6
- North Dakota - 19,5
- Vermont - 19,5
- South Dakota - 19,4
- Colorado - 19,4
- Rhode Island - 19,4
- Florida - 19,4
In other states, the figures are significantly lower. Here are the states with the lowest life expectancy after age 65:
- West Virginia - 16,6 years
- Mississippi - 16,7
- Kentucky - 16,8
- Oklahoma - 16,8
- Arkansas - 17
- Alabama - 17,1
- Tennessee - 17,2
- Louisiana - 17,5
- Indiana - 17,7
- Missouri - 17,8
- Ohio - 17,8
However, there is also a positive trend: from 2021 to 2022, life expectancy increased in 48 states and the District of Columbia. The largest increases were recorded primarily in the southern states, as well as in several states in the West.

The decline occurred in only two states: Maine and Vermont, where life expectancy decreased by 0,1 years.
