13-year-old immigrant hanged herself because her father was denied asylum in the US

13-year-old Honduran immigrant Heidi Games Garcia attempted suicide after her single father was denied asylum in the United States. The girl, separated from a single parent for four years, died last week, connected to an artificial life support apparatus.

The girl was buried on July 23, her father was briefly released from the immigration detention center so that he could see his daughter off on her final journey—more precisely, the wording sounded like this: “to deal with the issues of his daughter’s death,” writes USA Today.

As Aunt the girl with whom she lived in America told, Heidi felt depressed because she had not seen her father for four years. The mother left her daughter two months after giving birth, and Manuel Gamez raised Heidi alone. He sent the girl to America, because in his hometown in Honduras, they constantly risked becoming victims of violent crimes. But the immigration authorities did not grant asylum to the man himself, although his daughter and sister received it.

Games talked on the phone with his daughter every day and crossed the border of the USA and Mexico three times, trying to reunite with her. The authorities detained him every time and sent him back to Honduras, according to CNN.

“Heidi would always ask, ‘When is Daddy coming?’” Heidi’s aunt, Jessica Gamez, said. “I asked her to be patient and explained that we were doing our best.”

A relative said that Heidi’s psychological state worsened after each father’s attempt to reunite with her. 1 Jun. Immigration authorities again detained Gamez near Texas and did not release him from the detention center until her daughter made a suicide attempt. Even in the hospital, Heidi was a man with a special bracelet on his leg, fixing his movement.

Hames was ordered to return to Texas on Saturday for deportation to Honduras. Since his life in his native country is still under threat, the man hopes that he will be allowed to stay in the USA.
