Over 120 visitors and resort staff in Sierra Nevada, California, spent five days in a snow trap before they were released.
US Forest Service spokeswoman Alicia Embry said that people could not leave Montecito Sequoia Lodge in Kings Canyon National Park because of the 7-foot (more than two meters) layer of snow and fallen trees in front of the hotel, writes CBS News.
To get to the people trapped in a snow trap, special crews had to change to snowmobiles. Upon arrival, the teams made sure that everyone was safe and brought provisions. A couple of days later, food was again delivered to the prisoners of the snowstorm. Only after that the heavy machinery and crews cleared more than 20 fallen trees and 8 miles of two-meter thick snow on the road leading to the hotel, so that the guests and staff finally left the building.
Embry said that the building had enough food, fuel, and general supplies for everyone to enjoy.
“Physically they were fine,” Embry said. “But they were clearly happy to go home.”
Joel Keeler, one of the hotel's captives, posted several videos on Twitter - starting Tuesday, when snow began to fall and it became clear that guests could not leave.
The next day he wrote: “It's cold, clear and beautiful, but we are still in the snow! They are doing their best to clear the way ... But so much more! ”
Update: it's cold, clear, and beautiful, but we're still snowed in! Some hope remains that we get out today. They are working hard to clear the road with their 2 Bobcats. Still a lot of driveway left tho! Then hopefully the park service plows the miles of road out from there ... pic.twitter.com/1wd1NNiZbt

On Thursday, the man announced that the guests would finally go home, and shared a video that showed a cleared roadway and a caravan of dozens of snow-covered cars near high snowdrifts.

The snow started falling last Friday and by Saturday evening there was 4 to 7 feet of snow.
Meanwhile, another winter storm is moving into the region. Meteorologists issued a winter storm warning for the southern Sierra Nevada starting at noon Friday, promising more snow, strong winds and potentially dangerous conditions including falling trees and slick roads.
The Forest Service encouraged visitors to travel with extreme caution.
“The recent storm has left very little wiggle room and no place for new snow to settle,” said Ned Kelleher, chief ranger for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
He added: "The trees are covered with snow and ice, and the accumulation of new snow will lead to problems."
