12-year-old Gitanjali Rao came up with a quick and inexpensive way to determine the presence of lead in water. For this, she received the title of the best young US scientist in 2017, reports Air force.

With her invention she wanted help the city of Flint in Michigan, where in 2016, many residents were affected by lead contamination of city water.

The idea for the device came to Gitanjali when she saw her parents testing water using test strips. “This is not a very reliable method. We have to make many attempts to determine whether the water is safe,” the girl says.

Its device is based on a carbon nanotube filter that detects the presence of lead. The device is also equipped Bluetooth-Transmitter, which allows you to see the test results on the smartphone screen.

Other children Gitanjali advises never give up.

“When I first started experimenting, I failed many times. But then I began to learn from my mistakes and realized that failure is just another step on the path to success,” says Gitanjali.
